altar
An 8-day immersive arte-sana residency
ApplyWe gather to engage our hands and he(art)s to birth our altars thru fiber, clay and wax.
Together, we will:
• Weave our altar cloth “pacha”
• Mold from clay and fire a vessel of power or totem for our altar
• Dip beeswax candles with intentionThis is a call to those who feel inspired—to co-create, consecrate, and return to the sacred through the embodied acts of art.
We will create a collective altar to exalt our communal prayers for the waters, and for all sentient beings enduring hardship + violence.
We will also each create our individual altars, to support us in calling forth what we need in order to proceed in our bodies, hearts, in our work, and in our relations. A place to infuse with gratitude, in order to elevate and altar the course of our lives in alignment with our greatest coherence.

ALTAR (noun)
An altar is a point of convergence between the visible and the invisible, where the seen world bows before the unseen. It is a threshold, a sacred interface where spirit and matter commune, and where offerings are made to honor the divine within and beyond. The altar is not just a physical construct but a reflection of the inner temple: the heart, the mind, the soul's hearth. Upon it, intention becomes prayer, fire becomes purification, and silence becomes presence.
From the flower-strewn Bhakti altars of India, where deities are adorned with fresh garlands, incense, and flame—to the Andean mesa, where stones, coca leaves, shells, and bones are arranged as portals for reciprocity (ayni) with the Apus and Pachamama, altars offer a language beyond words.
In Amazonian tradition, the altar is a living ecosystem of mapacho, feathers, medicinal plants, and musical instruments that invoke ancestral and elemental presence.
The Día de los Muertos altar, an altar of memory, communion, and celebration. Adorned with marigolds, sugar skulls, food, water, and photos, it is a bridge between the living and the dead, a luminous homecoming of spirits.
Each altar is an anchor of ritual, a node in the cosmic web where energies can be invoked, transformed, and released. A space where time bends into eternity, and the self becomes a vessel for the sacred. Every object placed—a candle, stone, feather, or chalice—becomes a sigil of remembrance, evocation, or becoming.
ALTAR (verb) — to altar
To altar something is to consecrate it, to place it upon the inner altar of awareness, intention, gratitude, and surrender. It is an act of sanctifying, of offering up a thought, action, relationship, or object into the fire of transformation.
To altar is to elevate the mundane into the sacred through conscious attention and reverent intent.
It is to build a sanctuary that supports us in calling forth what we need in order to proceed; in our bodies, hearts, work, and relations.
A space to infuse with gratitude, so that we may elevate and altar the course of our lives in alignment with our greatest coherence.
